Business Interrupted: The Unexpected Disaster Your IT Provider Should Be Planning For

Why Backups Alone Won’t Save Your Business

I hear it all the time. “We’ve got backups, so we’re covered.” And I get it. It feels like a safety net. But here’s the thing most folks don’t realize until it’s too late. Having a backup is one thing. Being able to keep your business running when everything hits the fan is something else entirely.

Storm knocks out the power. A piece of hardware fails. Some hacker decides to make your company today's target. These things never give you a heads-up. And when they happen, if all you’ve got is a few files saved somewhere, you're going to be in for a rough ride.

A backup might give you your data back. But that doesn't mean your shop keeps moving. If systems are down, your team can't log in, machines sit idle, and your customers start wondering why you're not picking up the phone. Even a short hiccup can turn into a drawn-out mess that costs you more than you think.

A lot of businesses think they're protected, but they don’t have a real plan. They don’t know how long recovery would take. They haven’t decided who does what when things go wrong. They haven’t even thought about where folks would work if the building wasn’t accessible. It's not because they’re careless. It’s just one of those things that keeps getting pushed down the list.

That’s where business continuity comes in. I don’t mean some dusty binder on a shelf. I’m talking about real-world preparation. Making sure your systems are set up so if something goes sideways, your team can still get to what they need. Having backups stored offsite, locked down and tested. Knowing exactly how long you can afford to be down before the damage starts stacking up. Making sure folks can work from somewhere else if they have to. And most of all, running through it ahead of time so there are no surprises.

Disasters come in all shapes and sizes. Fires, floods, ransomware, power surges. Some you can see coming. Most you can’t. But it’s not about the disaster. It’s about the response.

So let me ask. If your systems went down tomorrow, would you know what to do? Would your people? Would your customers notice, or would things keep rolling?

If you don’t have a confident answer to that, it’s time to get one.
